ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Improved catalytic compositions consisting of Group VIII metals and mixtures thereof on a support prepared by depositing said Group VIII metals and mixtures thereof on a support and pretreating the composition prior to use, wherein the improvement comprises: (a) using as the support for the Group VIII metal or mixture thereof, a transition metal oxide selected from the group consisting of titania, vanadia, niobia, tantala and mixtures thereof, zirconium titanate and alkaline earth titanates, and (b) as a final step before use, reducing the compositions in a reducing atmosphere at a temperature sufficient to produce a composition which exhibits suppressed hydrogen chemisorption. The improved catalysts are used in reactions such as the dehydrocyclization of n-heptane and the hydrogenolysis of ethane.
