A method of manufacturing a foam body having an anisotropic cell structure, the method comprising the steps of: expanding a polymer at an elevated temperature to form an initial foam body (10); and cooling the initial foam body under a negative pressure. There is also provided a method of manufacturing a foam body having an anisotropic cell structure, the method comprising the steps of. (a) in a first expansion step, expanding a foamable polymer composition substantially isotropically to form an initial foam body having an isotropic cell structure; and (b) in a second expansion step, expanding the initial foam body anisotropically in a selected direction under a negative pressure which applies an expanding force in the selected direction to provide a final foam body having an anisotropic cell structure. Apparatus for the methods are also disclosed.

Linvention concerne un procédé de fabrication dun corps de mousse qui présente une structure cellulaire anisotrope, le procédé comprenant les étapes suivantes : lexpansion dun polymère à une température élevée pour former un corps de mousse initial; et le refroidissement du corps de mousse initial sous une pression négative. Linvention concerne également un procédé de fabrication dun corps de mousse qui présente une structure cellulaire anisotrope, le procédé comprenant les étapes suivantes : (a) lors dune première étape dexpansion, lexpansion dune composition polymère expansible de manière sensiblement isotrope pour former un corps de mousse initial ayant une structure cellulaire isotrope; et (b) lors dune seconde étape dexpansion, lexpansion du corps de mousse initial de manière anisotrope dans une direction sélectionnée sous une pression négative qui applique une force dexpansion dans la direction sélectionnée afin dobtenir un corps de mousse final ayant une structure cellulaire anisotrope. Linvention concerne également un appareil destiné à mettre en uvre les procédés.
