This invention provides a structural part, such as a running board, a tailgate, a door, a frame, a window or other structural part for a motor vehicle. The structural part consists of a composite of polymer and metal and may be made using a plurality of modular moulds, most of which are suitable for use with any motor vehicle. One example of a structural part made according to this invention is a running board. The running board is lightweight and has fewer parts than conventional running boards. Under the same loads, it deflects about ten times less than conventional runningboards. The parts of the running board include a waffle that provides support to a person exiting or entering the vehicle, at least two brackets to attach the waffle to the vehicle, a cover for the waffle which may include tread means or other means to provide a slip resistant surface, and an end cap for each of the two ends of the waffle.
