12 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A stable filter is fabricated with a spectral transmission function that is the approximate reciprocal of the source radiation spectrum that is to be analyzed. The source light after passing through the filter will ideally be at an intensity of 1 unit for all wavelengths. In practise, filter technology cannot exactly produce the reciprocal of the source curve for a complex light beam passing through the filter, but the variation in intensity can be held to only a few orders of magnitude, asopposed to the ten or more orders of magnitude by which the source might vary without the filter. When this filter is placed in front of a monochromator and detector, it reduces the out-of-band light leakage to the point where a relatively inexpensive system that can attain only 2 or 3 orders of magnitude intensity dynamic range can now spectrally resolve a source having 10 or more orders of magnitude of dynamic range. This invention is particularly effective in resolving the spectral content of the sun's radiant light spectral curve in the UVB portion of the spectrum. The data obtained from the detector can be manipulated in a computer to recreate the original spectral curve of the photon source being analyzed.
