ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus is disclosed for use in assembling and disassembling a strut assembly of the type having a shock absorber axially disposed within a coil spring. The apparatus includes a frame and attach- ment members for holding a first portion of the spring with the spring positioned in predetermined alignment within the frame. A compression head is mounted on the frame and movable toward and away from a compression direction. The compression head includes first and second compression elements for imparting a force on a second portion of the spring and urging the spring toward the compression direction. The compression head includes linkage for connecting the first and second compression elements with the elements being movable relative to one another and free to assume unaligned positions as the compression head urges the spring into compression.
