A stuffing box and a method of sealing the same involves positioning a sealing assembly in the stuffing box which includes a first annular seal carrier and a second annular seal carrier. Each of the first annular seal carrier and the second annular seal carrier has an interior shaft engaging surface with at least one seal and an exterior housing engaging surface with at least one seal. Packing is disposed between the first annular seal carrier and the second annular seal carrier. A second step involves injecting a viscous lubricant into the packing. The role of the first annular seal carrier and the second annular seal carrier is containment of the viscous lubricant. The presence of this viscous lubricant helps preclude the incursion of produced well fluids into the sealing assembly, as the produced well fluids cannot enter into the sealing assembly without first displacing the viscous lubricant.
