It has been discovered that the polymerization of vinyl aromatic compounds, such as styrene, may be inhibited by the addition of a composition that contains a dihydroxyarene or an alkyl-dihydroxyarene, a hydrogen transfer agent, and a stable nitroxide. In another, preferred embodiment of the invention, these three components are blended in an organic amine.
