A highly syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) which has a weight-average molecular weight of 1x104 to 2x106 and wherein the weight fraction of the extract obtained by dissolving SPS in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, cooling the solution to yield a gel, and extracting the gel with methylene chloride is 10 wt.% or less. The SPS can provide oriented films having high breaking strength and molded articles that have high Izod impact strength, thermal deformation temperature and breaking strength after being exposed to heat for long, and do not undergo any reduction in surface luster even after being used intermittently or continuously at high temperatures.
Polystyrène hautement syndiotactique (SPS) présentant une masse molaire moyenne en poids de 1x10?4¿ à 2x10?6¿, la fraction pondérale de l'extrait obtenu par dissolution du SPS dans du 1,2,4-trichlorobenzène, par refroidissement de la solution pour produire un gel, et par extraction du gel à l'aide de chlorure de méthylène, étant de 10 % en poids ou moins. Le SPS peut être utilisé pour produire des films orientés présentant une résistance à la rupture élevée ainsi que des articles moulés présentant une résistance au choc selon Izod, une température de déformation thermique et une résistance à la rupture élevées après avoir été longuement exposés à la chaleur, et qui ne subissent aucune réduction du lustre superficiel même après avoir été utilisés par intermittence ou de manière continue à des températures élevées.
