ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for the manufacture of a cylindrical body of rotation, e.g. a turbine or generator shaft, provided with a weld coating produced by a submerged arc welding process has welding heads mounted for movement along a path of travel extend- ing parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body; the welding heads being provided with devices for supplying welding wire and welding powder thereto and being mounted on welding head carriages. The supply devices are mounted on carriages separate from the welding head carriages and a first drive is provided for dis- placing the welding head carriages and a separate second drive separate from the first drive is provided for displacing the supply device carriages.
