SUBMERSIBLE PUMP FOR USE IN TOXIC AND HAZARDOUS WASTE SAMPLING Abstract of the Invention A submersible small diameter elongate progressive cavity pump assembly for use in the testing of wells so as to detect and monitor the existence of toxic and hazardous waste at subsurface levels. The submersible pump assembly comprises an elongate narrow diameter hollow stainless steel casing member provided with water intake openings through the central portion of the wall thereof and which is adapted for lowering through the pipe of an existing well. A progressive cavity pump is provided in the upper portion of the casing member which comprises a stainless steel rotor member and a rubber or Teflon stator member. The lower intake portion of the progressive cavity pump is positioned proximate to and above the water intake openings provided through the wall of the casing member. The rotor member extends downwardly from the progressive cavity pump and is connected to the upper end of an elongate universal joint connector member which extends downwardly through the casing member below the water intake openings provided through the central portion of the casing wall. The lower end of the universal joint connector member is connected to the upwardly extending drive shaft of a pump drive motor sealable provided in the lower portion of the casing member below the water intake openings. The pump drive motor is adapted to selectively actuate the progressive cavity pump so as to draw water samples through the water intake openings of the casing member and deliver them to the surface for testing purposes. The upper delivery end of the progressive cavity pump is provided with an outlet connector means which extends through the upper closure member of the casing member for selective connection with a water delivery tube which is adapted to convey a water sample to the surface for testing purposes. Pump motor power supply means are provided which extend downwardly from the surface through the casing member to the pump motor so as to selectively actuate the motor as desired.
