ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A subsea caisson or silo for housing wellhead equipment and a method of installing it is disclosed. A caisson which is sized to receive equipment that is to remain subsea has a closed top and open bottom. The caisson is lowered to the sea bed and hydrostatic pressure in the form of a suction jet is used to remove the internal soil. A rotatable cutter can be used if the seabed soil is too hard for effective hydrostatic removal.
