ABSTRACT A subsea casing hanger suspension system has one or more casing hanger assemblies for supporting and transmitting the load of their concentric casing strings on and to a subsea wellhead housing. A split ring type multiple shoulder load ring is part of the hanger assembly. The load ring is radially expanded from its contraction condition. The annuler load ring has an angular cross-section configuration which precludes inadvertent activation of the ring by upward and downward loads imposed upon it. When the casing string in its hanger assembly, containing the ring are being lowered downhole during installation in the well. The load ring as expanded by contact with a previously installed annulus packoff, geometry of the load ring is shaped to prevent its accidental radial engagement with the surrounding riser couplings and/or other elements through which the hanger assembly and its casing string descend during installation.
