The invention relates to substantially pure interleukin-9 receptor molecules, and the uses thereof. The molecule is a glycoprotein of about 64 kilodaltons and, upon digestion with N-glycosidase F, yields a peptide of about 54 kilodaltons. Figure 2 shows the binding of radioactive IL-9 to TS1 cells; which contain the IL-9 receptor, over time at various incubation temperatures. The substantially purified molecule can be used to inhibit the effect of IL-9 on an individual, to determine the amount of IL-9 in a sample, to determine the presence of cells which contain the IL-9 receptor, and to screen pharmaceuticals far efficacy in treating conditions characterized by excess proliferation of cells which proliferate in response to IL-9.
