ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This disclosure describes new compounds and compositions of matter use- ful as anti-inflammatory agents and as inhibitors of the progressive joint deter- ioration characteristic of arthritic disease and the methods of meliorating inflammation and of inhibition joint deterioration in mammals therewith. The novel active ingredients of said compositions of matter are 1-phenyl-1H-1,2,4- triazoles of the formula: Image ) wherein R1 and R2 are each individually selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluoro, chloro, bromo, nitro, amino and dimethylaminomethyleneamino; R3 is selected from the group consisting of 2-pyridyl, 3-pyridyl, 4-pyridyl, 2-pyra- zinyl, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl and moieties of the formula: Image wherein R is hydrogen, fluoro, chloro, bromo, nitro, amino or dimthylaminomethyl- eneamino with the proviso that when R is hydrogen then R1 and R2 may not both be hydrogen; and R4 is hydrogen or methyl; and/or the pharmacologically acceptable acid-addition salts thereof.
