A novel substituted benzenedithiol metal complex represented by the general formula (1) is provided. The substituted benzenedithiol metal complex is useful as a singlet oxygen quencher and as an optical data recording medium per se. (see formula 1) wherein M is a transition metal; A+ is a quaternary ammonium group; and R is an organic group selected from the group consisting of organic groups represented by the formulae (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv): (see formula i) (wherein R1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms), (see formula ii) (wherein n is 3, 4 or 5), (see formulas iii and iv) (wherein R2 is one of a hydrogen atom and a substitutent having 1 to 4 carbon atoms).
