A method is disclosed for inhibiting corrosion of a ferrous based metal in contact with an aqueous system comprising incorporating into the aqueous system an effective amount of a substituted carboxymethoxysuccinic acid selected from the group consisting of compounds having the formula: Image wherein R is -(CHOH)n CH2OH, -(CHOH)n CO2H or -(CHOH)r (CHOR')CO2H and R' is CH(CO2H)CH2CO2H; n is 1, 2, 3 or 4; m is 1,2,3, or 4; r is 1,2, or 3; and water soluble salts thereof.
