Abstract Substituted piperazin-1-yl-acetic acid amides of the formula (I) Image (I) wherein R1 denotes, for example phenyl, pyridyl, thienyl, furyl, amino, alkylamino, phenylamino or alkoxy, R2 denotes, for example, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, morpholino, 4-methylpiperazin- 1-yl, pyrrolidin-1-yl, piperidino, diethanolamino, dipropanol- amino, -NH(CH2)n-R3 or -NH(CH2)m-R4, R3 denotes hydroxyl, alkoxy amino, alkylamino or dialkylamino, R4 denotes phenyl, sub- stituted phenyl or pyridyl, n denotes 2 or 3 and m denotes 1 or 2, have encephalotropic actions and are used as pharmacological active compounds for combating cerebral insufficiency or improving intellectual performance. The compounds of the formula (I) are prepared by the following reactions; a) acylation of piperazin-1-yl-acetic acid amide of the formula, Image b) reaction of a piperazide (IV) with an amide (V), Image (V) Y: a leaving group c) reaction of a piperazin-1-yl-acetic acid derivative (VI) with an amine (VII), Image (VII) X: a leaving group.
