The invention provides a polyoxyalkylene compound of general formula (see fig. I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, arylalkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylaryl or heterocyclyl group; R2 represents an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, arylalkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylaryl, heterocyclyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylamino, dialkylamino or arylamino group; A represents an oxygen atom (-O-) or a group -NH-; and X represents a polyoxypropylene chain or a random copolymer of ethylene oxide/propylene oxide, and an oxygen atom of group X is bonded directly to the R2CO- moiety. The invention further provides a process for the preparation of the compound, a lubricating oil composition and a fuel composition which each include the compound, a lubricating oil concentrate, the use of the compound as a rust inhibitor and a method of operating an internal combustion engine.
