ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the synthesis of an organophosphorus compound of the formula Image wherein R is C1-C3 alkyl or phenyl, R1 is hydrogen or R and R1 together form a 1,3-butadien-1,4-diyl group optionally substituted with a methyl or chloro group, or R and R1 together form a 1,2- ethenediylthio group wherein sulfur is attacned to carbon; R2 is hydrogen or halogen; X is oxygen or sulfur; R3 is C1-C3 alkyl; and R4 is C1-3 alkoxy or propythio and their hydrochlorides, with the proviso that if R is phenyl, R3 is methyl and R4 is methoxy is disclosed. In this process a new intermediate, a chloromethyl pyrimidine derivative, Image where R, R1 and R2 have the meanings given above, is reactant with a compound of the formula Image where R3, R4 and X have the meanings given above and M is an alkali metal or ammonium cation. Also disclosed is a process for the synthesis of the chloro- methyl pyrimidine derivative comprising the reaction of ethyl 4- chloroacetoacetate with a compound of the formula Image where R and R1 have the meanings given above.
