Compounds of the formula I and salts thereof Image ( I ) in which R1 [lacuna] CN, C(=Z)-Q(AiXi)q-R, -C(=Z)-QR*, 1,2,3,4- tetrazol-5-yl, 1,3,4-triazol-2-yl, 1,3-oxazol-2-yl, and the remaining radicals are as defined in claim 1, are suitable for use as safeners for protecting crop plants such as, for example, cereals, rice and maize, against herbicide damage. Some of the compounds are known and some are novel and they can be prepared from quinolin-8-oxy derivatives by the processes of claim 7.
