ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved apparatus is disclosed for the detection of gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide. The improved apparatus and process uses a minimum of expensive antibody. Polymyxin adheres to a substrate such as a plastic microtiter plate or cloth, either woven or non-woven. The polymyxin can then bind to lipopolysaccharide which may in turn be identified by standard enzyme, radio or fluorescent immunoassay. Non-woven polyester cloth is particularly suited for the purpose. The improved apparatus is particularly useful in the detection of bacterial pathogens in food.
