These substrates are useful in the colorimetric determination of .gamma.-GT since the cleavage of the .gamma.-glutamyl group produces a detect- able species- -an aminostyrylguinolinium dye. The substrates have the formula: Image wherein: R and R1 are independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl and alkoxy and Image or Image wherein: R2 is alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R3 and R4 are independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, cyano and halogen; and X.THETA. is an anion.
