ABSTRACT Substrates for enzymes, which substrates are of formula 5'-X-A-Y-N02, wherein A represents an aromatic nucleus, X represents an auxochromic radical, Y represents an unsaturated group which is capable of transmitting electron resonance between the aromatic nucleus A and the nitro N02 substituent, and S' represents a proplonyloxy, a palmitoyloxy, a phosphate, diphosphate, a sulphatc or a glycoside residue, are particularly useful for assay of enzymes. Preferred compounds are those in which -X- represents -O- and A-Y-N02 a 4-omega-nitrostyryl group, which may be sub- stituted, for example, by one or two methoxy groups. The preferred compounds are conveniently prepared by reacting a p-hydroxybenz- aldehyde compound with an enzyme substrate derivative providing the S'- residue and nitromethylating the product. The enzyme substrate of the invention is preferably used in association with a solid phase material.
