IP-0669 TITLE SUBSTRATES WITH STERICALLY-PROTECTED, STABLE, COVALENTLY-BONDED ORGANO-SILANE FILMS ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to unique stable support structures comprising substrates coated with sterically-protecting monofunctional silanes. This structure consists of an appropriate reactive solid to which a monofunctional silane is covalently bonded that contains at least two sterically-protecting groups attached to the silicon atom of the silane. TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to novel stable support structures comprising a hydrated metal oxide or metalloid oxide, or a solid organic polymer substrate, to which is covalently attached a monofunctional silane containing at least two sterically-protecting groups attached to the silicon atom of the silane. This invention also relates to processes for the production of such support structures. The products and processes of this invention are useful in a wide variety of applications including: efficient, highly stable packings for chromatographic separations, both for analysis and large-scale isolations; stable, selective media for affinity chromatography separations; highly-selective catalysts for liquid-phase reactions; the solid-phase synthesis of peptides, proteins, and oligionucleotiaes; stable, efficient matrices in peptide and nucleotide synthesizer instruments; and, highly selective phases in peptide and protein sequencing.
