The fusion (F) protein, attachment (G) pro- tein and matrix (M) protein of respiratory syncy- tial virus (RSV) are isolated and purified from res- piratory syncytial virus by mild detergent extrac- tion of the proteins from concentrated virus, load- ing the protein onto a hydroxyapatide or other ion- exchange matrix column and eluting the protein using mild salt treatment. The F, G and M pro- teins, formulated as immunogenic compositions, are safe and highly immunogenic and protect rele- vant animal models against disease caused by res- piratory syncytial virus infection.
