The present invention provides a device for actuating a sucker rod assembly, the device comprising an electric linear motor (14), which includes an armature (12) and a stator (18), positioned about an axis of operation of the sucker rod pump and a counterbalance (22) positioned such that it counterbalances the weight of the sucker rod assembly and the liquid being pumped.
