ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Medical suction pumps are used to pump fluid into a collection jar which is disconnected from the pump when full and disposed of. In the present invention, the pump is a diaphragm pump having a lower rigid plate that is sealed at its edge to the jar, and an upper flexible plate which is coupled to a drive unit and which can be detached from the lower plate so that the lower plate and jar can be disposed of, whilst the upper plate is retained with the drive unit. In one arrangement, the pump has one-way valves which enable it to create a reduced gas pressure in the jar so that fluid is drawn into the jar without passing through the pump chamber. In another arrangement, the fluid is pumped through the pump chamber. In this arrangement the upper plate is preferably disposed of with the lower plate and the suction jar which could be a flexible bag.
