A suction sweeping machine has a high powered suction attachment including a vacuum pump 45 independent of a main source of suction on the machine, a canister 31 separate from a main rubbish collector, and suction hoses 41 and 27,13 extending between a suction head 17 and a canister 31 and the pump 45 and the canister 31, respectively, a manifold 50 preferably being provided by means of which power from a main power source to the wheels 5 of the machine may be diverted to a hydraulic motor 49 for the pump 45. The attachment also has a hand-held lance-like portion 21 which is held by the operator, its remote end terminating in a soft rubber head 17, and to which a spring head 53 for disinfectant is preferably fitted.
