A suffering anvil for use in a component insertion machine for making printed circuit boards includes a pusher member having a first portion and a second portion. The first portion has a first nominal outside dimension while the second portion has a second greater outside dimension. The first portion is positioned adjacent a mouth of the anvil body and moves out through the mouth responsive to a sensor-controlled cam. The reduced size of the first portion of the pusher member facilitates removing debris that would otherwise clog up the device by allowing airflow through the opening in the body portion to remove any such debris.
