ABSTRACT Sugar cane is processed using an apparatus for sep- arating cane into epidermis rind and pith components, which in- cludes: a casing; feed drums in said casing for gripping cane billets; splitter blade means in said casing for splitting cane billets into two pieces; a core milling drum and cooperating core feed drum for removing the core of each piece of cane billet; an epidermis milling drum and cooperating epidermis feed drum for removing wax and epidermis from each piece of cane billet; each of said milling drums comprising an elongated cylindrical body, a plurality of milling blades, blade receiving slots extending longitudinally of said body for receiving said milling blades, and additional slots between each adjacent pair of blade receiving slots, whereby the sides of said blade receiving slots may be flexed toward and away from said milling blades for securing or removing said milling blades respectively.
