Abstract of the Disclosure Novel sugar ureide and thioureide derivatives of the formula: Image wherein R1 represents a monovalent residue of aldose or 2-aminoaldose from which the hemiacetal-hydroxyl group has been removed and of which the alcoholic hydroxyl groups have been protected or a monovalent residue of aldonic acid or 2-aminoaldonic acid from which the hydroxyl group in the carboxyl group has been removed and of which the alcoholic hydroxyl groups have been protected; R2 represents an unsubstituted or substituted aralkyl group, an unsubstituted or substituted and/or condensed heterocyclic group, a N- heterocyclic-substituted sulfamoyl aryl group, a group R3CONH- wherein R3 represents an unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic group or a group R4NH- wherein R4 represents an unsubstituted or substituted aryl group; and Y represents an atom of oxygen or sulfur, are prepared by reacting a compound selected from the group consisting of isocyanates and isothio- cyanates of the general formula: R1NC = Y wherein R1 and Y have the meanings defined above with an amino compound of the general formula: R2NH2 wherein R2 has the meaning defined above. The novel derivatives are useful in the therapeutic treatment of gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections.
