ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The specification decribes a method for removing hydrogen sulfide from a natural gas stream. The method comprises the steps of contacting the natural gas under pressure with an alkaline H2S absorbing solution to remove H2S from the gas stream and to provide an alkaline H2S containing solution, and heating the H2S containing solution at a pressure lower than the natural gas contacting pressure to remove H2S from the H2S containing solution and to provide a regenerated alkaline H2S absorption solution for recyclic contact with a natural gas stream. The improvement, according to the specification comprises the steps of measuring the hydrosulfide ion concentration of the regenerated alkaline absorption solution, and maintaining the hydrosulfide ion concentration of the regenerated solution in a predetermined concentration range sufficient to provide for removal of substantially all of the hydrosulfide from the gas under the contacting conditions.
