The present invention is directed to sulfonamide derivatives of the general formula (I): (see formula I) wherein R is C6-14 aryl or a heterocyclic residue each of which may have one or more substituents or the salt thereof. The sulfonamide derivatives show strong inhibitory activity against cysteine protease such as calpain papain, cathepsin B, cathepsin H, cathepsin L. They can be used as remedies for muscular dystrophy, cataract, myocardial infarction, stroke, amyotrophia, osteoporosis, hypercalcemia or the like.
