PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF CARBON FIBER Abstract of the Disclosure A process for the production of carbon fiber, which comprises sulfonating polyethylene fiber with chlorosulfonic acid, sulfuric acid, fuming sulfuric acid or a mixture of two or more kinds thereof and carbonizing the resulting precursor fiber by heating at a temperature of 600 to 3,000°C, optionally with the fiber under tension, the treatment being carried out in an inert gas or vacuum.
