ABSTRACT Alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons are sulfonated with SO3 gas, and an anhydrous low molecular weight carboxylic acid is added to the hydrocarbon before sulfonation to improve the color and lower the H2SO4 content of the sulfonic acid reaction product. The hydrocarbon is sulfonated in an atomized condition to provide a reaction mixture which is quenched by, and agglomerated in, cooled, recycled reaction product.
