ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There are disclosed novel sulfone compounds which are represented by the formula Image wherein X represents the nonmetallic atoms necessary to form a nucleus which completes a 5- or 6-membered hetaroc?lic moiety including substituted rings and fused rings and R is alkyl, preferably having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, aryl such as phenyl or substituted aryl. The compounds are useful in photographic applications and provide controlled release of a photographically useful material during processing of photographic elements with an aqueous alkaline processing composition. In particularly preferred embodiments the sulfone compounds are utilized in diffusion transfer photographic products and processes.
