ABSTRACT Compositions suitable as replacements for sulfurized sperm oil as extreme pressure additives in lubricants are obtained by sulfurizing a mixture of at least one fatty acid ester (preferably an oil such as soybean oil), at least one C8-36 aliphatic olefin (preferably an .alpha.-olefin), and at least one fatty acid (preferably unsaturated).
