Abstract of the Invention Sulfur as hydrogen sulfide in gas streams in concentrations of only parts per million is substituted for the majority of the steam required to suppress the formation of carbon in a process for the production of methane from gas streams containing hydrogen and mixtures of the oxides of carbon at temperatures above 900°F in the presence of a catalyst containing a metal from the third period of Group VIII of the Periodic Table on a thermally stable ceramic alumina support.
