Sulfur recovery processes are supplied with oxygen-enriched air obtained by passing atmospheric air through gas separation membranes. The oxygen-enriched air is used in any portion of the process where combustion occurs, including the initial Claus reaction furnace, fuel-fired or acid gas-fired reheaters, tail gas incinerators, incinerators in tail gas cleanup units, or two or more of these locations at once. The use of membranes rather than other means of achieving oxygen enrichment reduces certain risks of accidental increases in the oxygen content and provides an easily maintained and transported source of oxygen at low cost.
