ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE SULPHONATION PROCESS Internal olefins are sulphonated in improved yield by use of exceptionally low temperature conditions with an SO3/olefin ratio in the range 1.2:1 to 1.9:1. Neutralisation is preferably effected with heated alkaline solution or alcoholic alkali or a mixture of alkali and ethoxylated nonionic surfactant which leads directly to a useful combination of anionic and nonionic surfactants.
