Sulphur monochloride and a phenol are reacted to produce an oil-soluble intermediate which is then reacted with an unsaturated organic compound having one or more olefinic or acetylenic bonds to reduce the amount of active sulphur in the intermediate and to leave no excess of hydrocarbon, thereby to produce a low-chlorine, low-active sulphur content oil-soluble sulphurised phenol.

On fait réagir le chlorure de soufre et un phénol pour produire un intermédiaire oléosoluble que l'on fait ensuite réagir avec un composé organique insaturé, ayant une ou plusieurs liaisons oléfiniques ou acétyléniques, pour diminuer la quantité de soufre actif dans l'intermédiaire et ne laisser aucun excès d'hydrocarbure, ce qui permet d'obtenir un phénol sulfuré oléosoluble, avec une faible teneur en chlore et une faible teneur en soufre actif.
