ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus are disclosed for the retrofit installation of an auxiliary hoist rope brake on an existing elevator hoist system. The apparatus includes a frame which supports the existing elevator hoist in an elevated position with respect to its original foundation, and which supports the hoist rope brake in operative relation to the elevator hoist ropes.
