The support means (7) has a trunk, which comprises at least one strand (20) consisting of several tensile carriers (25, 26, 27, 28) twisted or braided together and which extends in the longitudinal direction of the support means and has a cross-sectional area with a width (A) and a height (B) with a ratio of width/height of preferably 0.5 to 2. Fastened to the trunk is at least one guide body (35, 36) which extends in the longitudinal direction of the support means (7) and projects laterally from the trunk. In a lift for transporting at least one load the support means (7) is connected with the respective load and arranged to be movable in its longitudinal direction, wherein the trunk of the support means is brought into contact with at least one guide surface (12, 14) for the trunk so as to guide the support means (7) transversely to the longitudinal direction thereof. The lift comprises at least one guide device (11, 13, 15) for the respective guide body (35, 36) for limiting or preventing a rotation of the support means (7) about the longitudinal direction thereof.
