A silica-supported catalyst suitable for the selective hydrogena-tion of acetylene in hydrocarbonaceous streams, comprising from 0.001 to 1 % by weight, based on the supported catalyst, of pal-ladium and from 0.005 to 5 % by weight, based on the supported catalyst, of at least one promoter metal of groups 1 and 2 of the periodic table, obtainable by impregnating a silica support with a solution comprising at least one promoter metal, drying the im-pregnated support, impregnating with a palladium-including sol-ution, drying and calcining.
