A supporting device eg. a cushion, has an enclosure formed by a flexible envelope filled with a plurality of elements (4). These elements are movable relative to each other and are flexible, gas filled, thin walled and deformable for distributing a load over the supporting surface. The covering of a number of elements is manufactured from a substantially non elastic material. These elements are each filled with the gas for 50- 90 % of their maximum volume and have a volume of from 10 to 100 cubic centimetres.
