Low-noise, bidirectional communications in a fiber optic cable is achieved by coupling a first end of the cable to a spectrally-sliced optical power source. A second end of the cable is coupled to an optical detector having a detector bandwidth, such that the bandwidth of the optical power source is greater than the detector bandwidth. When the bandwidth of the optical power source is large compared to the bandwidth of the detector, the beat frequencies resulting from coherent Rayleigh noise fall outside the bandwidth of the detector and are not detected.

Des communications bidirectionnelles à faible bruit sont réalisées dans un câble à fibres optiques par le couplage de l'une des extrémités du câble à une source d'alimentation optique à découpage spectral. L'autre extrémité du câble est couplée à un détecteur optique dont la bande passante est moins large que celle de la source d'alimentation optique. Quand la bande passante de la source d'alimentation optique est large comparativement à celle du détecteur, les fréquences de battement résultant du bruit de Rayleigh cohérent se trouvent à l'extérieur de la bande passante du détecteur et ne sont pas détectées.
