Suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) by broadening the energy spectrum of participating SBS photons and/or phonons is achieved in an optical fiber having a core with both radially nonuniform viscosity and CTE profiles provided by alternating layers of glass modifying dopants such as phosphorus and fluorine. The nonuniform thermal expansion and viscosity profiles impart a residual, permanent, nonuniform stress in the fiber. The SBS suppressing effect provided by the nonuniform stress can be controlled and enhanced by applying a uniform or nonuniform tensile force to the fiber as it is being drawn. A preform for the fiber is also disclosed.

L'invention concerne la suppression de la diffusion de brillouin stimulée (SBS) par élargissement du spectre d'énergie des photons et/ou phonons SBS participants. Cela est réalisé dans une fibre optique dotée d'une âme possédant à la fois une viscosité et des profils CET (coefficient d'expansion thermique) radialement non uniformes, par l'alternance de couches de verre modifiant les dopants tels que le phosphore ou le fluor. L'expansion thermique et les profils CET non uniformes engendrent une contrainte résiduelle permanente non uniforme dans la fibre. L'effet de suppression de la diffusion de brillouin stimulée, créé par la contrainte non uniforme, peut être contrôlé et augmenté par application d'une force de traction uniforme ou non uniforme sur la fibre lorsqu'elle est tirée. L'invention concerne également une préforme de la fibre.
