ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE In accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a surface adjustable bent housing for use in a downhole drilling motor assembly includes a lower housing that is coupled by a threaded connection to a mandrel that is pivotally mounted in an upper housing by a ball-type joint and a pair of radial keys. A stack of rings having inclined end faces is mounted on the mandrel between the opposed ends of the upper and lower housing members so that the relative orientation of the rings creates a bend angle in the assembly that is rigidly maintained when the threaded connection is tightened against the rings, Longitudinal splines are used to couple the rings to the mandrel, which are selectively released during adjustment. Compressive loads due to bending moment are carried on the outer annular surfaces of the rings to provide a relatively stiff joint.
