A process and apparatus are provided for the generation of laser radiation by providing a fuel (105), such as methanol, ethanol, carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen, and air (106) to a catalyst (102), such as platinum, which is located beneath a polychromatic resonant optical cavity formed by laser mirrors (107) and (108). The catalyst surface is flooded with adsorbed fuel radicals, leaving relatively few sites for oxygen adsorption. Under this condition, the oxygen dissociates into two oxygen atoms or free radicals with approximately one electron volt of energy (i.e. "hot atoms"). These "hot atoms" of oxygen find fuel radicals as collision partners and form reaction products that are in their highest vibrational state. A vibrationally inverted population is a prerequisite of stimulated emission of radiation.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif de génération d'un rayonnement laser en apportant un combustible (105) tel que le méthanol, l'éthanol, le monoxyde de carbone et/ou l'hydrogène, et de l'air (106) à un catalyseur (102) tel que le platine se situant en dessous d'une cavité optique à résonance polychromatique formée des miroirs de laser (107, 108). La surface du catalyseur est inondée de radicaux de combustible adsorbés, ne laissant que peu de sites pour l'adsorption de l'oxygène. Dans ces conditions, l'oxygène se dissocie en ses deux atomes d'oxygène ou radicaux libres d'une énergie d'environ un électron volt, c'est-à-dire des atomes chauds. Ces atomes chauds d'oxygène rencontre les radicaux de combustible comme partenaires de collision et forment des produits de réaction qui sont au maximum de leur état de vibration. La stimulation d'émission du rayonnement présuppose une population à vibration inversée.
