An upright surface cleaning apparatus comprises a surface cleaning head having a dirt inlet and a support structure moveably mounted to the surface cleaning head. The support structure comprises an upper portion and a lower portion, wherein the upper portion is rotatable relative to the lower portion about an axis that intersects a longitudinal axis of at least one of the upper and lower portions and a releasable lock is located at a juncture of the upper and lower portions. A cleaning unit comprising an air treatment member is provided on the support structure. The lower portion comprises part of an air flow path from the dirty air inlet to the cleaning unit and the upper portion is isolated from the air flow path. An actuator is operatively connected to the lock by a connecting member extending through the upper portion and is positioned on the upper portion distal to the juncture.
